Dog Helps Woman Give Birth

therapy_dogPets have become a major part of family life. Now, a pregnant woman was allowed to take her dog to the hospital to help the woman throughout the birth. The maternity ward at St. Michael’s Hospital, in England, allowed the woman to take her dog, inside the delivery room, “because it is a certified therapy dog.”

The presence of the dog was discussed and agreed upon in advance, with the hospital’s infection control team giving their approval that it could be in the room during labor as therapy for the woman. A thorough cleaning of the delivery room was done after the dog, named Barney, left. Head of midwifery at St. Michael’s Hospital, Sarah Windfeld, said: “Barney is a certified Pets as Therapy or PAT dog, and it regularly visits patients in the hospital.”

Pets as Therapy, is a charity founded in 1983. Volunteers take their own friendly dogs and cats, who have been tested and vaccinated, to visit hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, schools and more to provide therapeutic visits for those in need.

To date, there are about 4,500 active dogs and 108 cats in the Pets as Therapy program, in the United Kingdom. Each week, these calm friendly dogs and cats give more than 130,000 people, both young and old, the pleasure and opportunity to hug and talk to them.

EXCLUSIVE: Presidency Sets Up High-Level Committee On Ezekwesili’s Damaging Remarks

ezekwe..An obviously rattled Nigerian presidency has cobbled together an informal committee made up of top administration officials to provide a blistering response to a former Vice President of the World Bank, Obiageli Ezekwesili, who has accused President Goodluck Jonathan and his predecessor of squandering over N10 trillion of Nigeria’s oil savings left behind by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

A presidential source familiar with the matter said President Jonathan administration was especially rattled by the former minister’s remark, and that he immediately ordered his top aides to provide a comprehensive response to the former minister’s claim, considered damaging enough to incite Nigerians against the regime.

Our source said Mr. Jonathan specifically instructed his Chief of Staff, Mike Oghiadomhe, to coordinate the damage control needed to check the fallout of Mrs. Ezekwesili’s remark.

It was Mr. Oghiadomhe who then constituted a committee comprising Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance; Labaran Maku, Minister of Information; Sylvester Monye, Special Adviser to the President on Monitoring and Evaluation; Bright Okogu, Director General, Budget Office of the Federation and Nwanze Okidegbe, Chief Economic Adviser to the President.

Also drafted into the team were Olasupo Olusi, Technical Assistant to the Minister of Finance and coordinator of the YouWin! Project; and Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs.

Our source said the team met and mapped out the framework for an aggressive response to Mrs. Ezekwesili’s remark. For a start, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala’s office was mandated to provide detailed response to all the issues raised by the former minister at the convocation lecture she gave at the University of Nigeria.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala then instructed her aide, Mr. Olusi, to urgently study Mr. Ezekwesili’s speech, and then provide an ideal response to her.

By Saturday afternoon, the finance minister’s aide, Mr. Olusi, had completed a draft which was then circulated to the rest of the team for review.

A final copy of the government’s response was sent to the information minister on Saturday night ahead of the press conference he addressed on Sunday afternoon.

After the press conference where he described Mrs Ezekwesili’s claims as “fallacious”, and betraying a “surprisingly limited” understanding of government finances, Mr. Maku also requested the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Reno Omokri, to aggressively confront the former minister on Twitter and Facebook, our source said.

Mr. Omokri immediately picked up the gauntlet, using his Twitter handle to tear at Mrs. Ezekwesili and describing her conduct as resembling that of a wicked stepmother.

Almost 10, 000 Ghost Workers Discovered in Kebbi State

In what might be challenging for the record of discovery of ghost workers in the country, about 9,258 “ghost workers” have been uncovered in the 21 local councils of Kebbi State by the Verification Committee on Local Government Staff.

This was made known by the state’s Chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Alhaji Bello Barade. However, the figure included workers that failed to show up for clearance. The NULGE boss said the exercise, conducted two months ago, had cleared 24,126 workers “as genuine staff of the councils.

In his words: “The records of such workers were studied and they were cleared. The exercise was not aimed at witch-hunting any worker.”

Further disclosing that 12,830 of the workers verified “were beneficiaries of political patronage,” Barade pointed out that “Such categories of staff would not be considered as workers due to the nature of their recruitment on political grounds, but they would continue to enjoy their salaries and allowances.”

Imo Governor, Okorocha, Calls For The Scrapping Of NYSC

Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has called for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and advocated for the setting up of specialised institutions to improve the standard of education in the country.

Okorocha who said this in a speech he delivered at the 50th anniversary lecture of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in Kaduna State said the NYSC scheme had outlived its usefulness. “The NYSC was set up to promote unity but that has failed, so we need to look into other areas to improve the quality of education for our youths’ he said.

Okorocha called for the establishment of specialised schools like the Law School in all fields of study to equip students with practical skills to fit into the modern society. “It is worrying that some of our graduates cannot read or write but if they attend specialised schools after graduation they can have more practical skills than theoretical,” he added.

Okorocha said exposing graduates to further practical skill acquisition would also assist government to determine the placement of universities on the scale of excellence. “We should stop grading universities by age but by specialisation which can be achieved through exposure to other graduates in a post graduate school,” he added.

The governor called on universities to also consider alternative sources of funding rather than relying on government for all revenue. “Universities can set up farms to produce food and technology firms to bid for contracts to increase internal revenue,” he said.

Okorocha also called on universities to look into the bloated number of staff to save costs. “Most universities have a huge number of non-academic staff and other non-essential staff coupled with adjunct teachers that are a drain on the resources of universities,” he stated.

Okorocha challenged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to cooperate with university authorities to survive by reducing consistent demands for wage increases and allowances. “ASUU should do more than just plan for strikes over the least problems. They should engage university authorities on ways to save costs,” he said.

Woman Denied S*x For 10 Years, Sues Husband

A housewife, Saratu Haruna, on Monday dragged her husband, Isa Mainika before a Kaduna Sharia Court two, Magajin Gari for allegedly denying her sex for 10 years. Haruna of Kawo, in Kaduna North Local Government Area, told the court that she was no longer interested in the marriage, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The woman said she no longer believes there is marriage between them.

“We have been staying for 10 years now, but nothing is happening between us in terms of marital affairs,” she said.

She told the court that she was no more interested in staying with Mainika as her husband, adding, “I don’t love him again.”

Mainika denied the claim, and accused the wife of starving him of sex.

“Anytime I request for sex, she always denies me. There was a time we had a serious fight over this issue and she bit me,” he said.

Mainika told the court that trouble started after his wife gave birth to their second baby.

He said, “Since then I do not know what I have done to her and I have asked her severally, but she refused to say anything.

“I even invited our elders to settle the matter but the effort yielded no positive result.

“I am still in love with her. I do not want to divorce her because I am really worried about the future of our children.”

The Presiding Khadi, Mallam Ibrahim Inuwa, ordered the couple to discuss the matter with their elders for amicable settlement.

Inuwa, however, said that if the case is not settled by the family, the court would decide on what to do.

“What is happening between you is not the Sunnah of our holy prophet. It is totally not acceptable in Islam to be cheating on one another,” he said.

The Khadi, therefore, adjourned the case till December 6 for continuation of hearing.
